They served, sacrificed, and have highly specialized skills and knowledge. Now, they’re using technology to broaden their horizons even further.
On June 26, armed forces veterans gathered at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London for a special digital skills event. In celebration of Armed Forces Day, Facebook hosted training sessions and panel discussions for 300 veterans as part of our Boost with Facebook for the Armed Forces Community event.
Re-entering civilian life can be challenging. According to Deloitte UK, one in five veterans describe finding the right job after leaving the military as “very difficult.” To address this problem, Facebook plans to support more veterans who want to start their own businesses. This includes the 300 veterans from the Boost event as well as providing ongoing training for veterans through its Boost training platform. Facebook also works with armed forces charity partners Heropreneurs and X-Forces to encourage and support veterans looking to set up their own businesses.
Andy Mihalop is a Marketing Program Lead at Facebook and former veteran. "Being in the military was a massively formative part of my life," he says. "I owe a lot of my success to the skills and traits I developed while serving. I'm really proud to be a part of this event today and the work Facebook is doing to support veterans through digital skills training and supportive workplace practices."
In addition to the training at the event, Facebook also marked its commitment to supporting veterans by signing the Armed Forces Covenant, further solidifying its commitment to supporting veterans in the workplace. “I am immensely proud to be signing the Armed Forces Covenant today,” says Steve Hatch, Facebook Managing Director for Northern Europe. “I want to thank the UK’s veteran community for their service on behalf of everyone here at Facebook.”
“It’s an honor to be signing the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the Ministry of Defense,” says Lieutenant General Richard Nugee, Chief of Defense People, Ministry of Defense. “Facebook is taking great steps to not only ensure veterans are supported in the workplace, but that the wider community of armed services personnel can access digital training to help them achieve their entrepreneurial ambitions.”
Around 14,000 people leave the UK armed forces every year, but on average only 2% set up their own businesses within four years of their departure. That’s just a handful of veterans starting businesses despite having key skills like discipline, leadership, and lateral thinking that make for great entrepreneurs. Based on the inspiring stories of setting up their own businesses and the electric feeling in the air of others excited to forge new paths at the Boost event, many more veteran members of the armed forces are ready to start their own entrepreneurial journeys.
