Asked to describe one of the proudest moments in her career, Kelly H., Network Investment Manager, lit up talking about her work on
Bifrost, a new subsea cable. “I remember the announcement, which was two years in the making, as if it were yesterday,” she beams. “I’ve never felt such a strong sense of relief and exhilaration after pouring my heart and soul into a project.”
Once complete,
Bifrost — the largest high-speed transmission cable across the Pacific — will connect Singapore, Indonesia and North America, bringing internet capacity to millions of people around the world.
This cable is one of several projects the Infrastructure team has been working on over the last couple of years. “When we look at a project, we evaluate more than how to connect point A to point B,” Kelly explains. “We look at a project holistically to consider how we can make a difference and optimize what we have in place today. Collaborating cross-functionally across teams and time zones, we’re constantly thinking about how to best deliver solutions that will have a positive and meaningful impact on the world.”
Charting a non-traditional path to the technology industry
Over the course of her career in telecoms, Kelly has worked for large companies in Australia, China, England and Singapore. Her journey to Meta was sparked by her recurring desire to try something new. “I was interested in pursuing a role with Meta because I wanted to work in an industry where things were changing, and for a company that was leading that change. I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference, learn and provide my perspective. I interviewed thinking the interview process and preparation alone would be a good experience to help me learn more about myself, the company and team culture, and the industry culture of submarine cables.”
While the majority of Kelly’s industry peers had engineering backgrounds, she landed the role with a strong background in partnerships. “Women are the minority in this industry, and I’m often the only or one of few women in a meeting with up to 30 men. At first, I felt a bit unsure about my experience and skills, but Meta pairs you with a project peer to work with. My skill set was a valuable match for my peer’s experience, and we made a great team. Through their guidance and encouragement, I developed a greater sense of confidence in my new role.”
Being with the company for over two years, Kelly sees her non-traditional path to the industry as a strength. “While I don’t have 30 years of subsea experience, my ability to see and process information differently than my peers is a welcome addition to our team. I don’t take anything as a given and I often ask questions others incorrectly assume everyone knows the answers to. It’s because I’m confident enough to share a fresh perspective that doors have opened, empowering my team to go forward.”

Navigating new global challenges
Working on complex global projects that will impact a large population calls for clear communication, a willingness to explore different perspectives and a lot of patience.
“The subsea world is traditional,” Kelly explains. “The projects we invest in are significant undertakings, often involving parties from a variety of countries. Given the scale and duration of the projects (it can take three to four years to build a trans-Pacific cable), it can be a rather demanding and serious business.”
Kelly’s role as a network investment manager is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. “My team relies on a cross-functional team of experts that are in constant communication with our partners and vendors. There are immense challenges to tackle, from navigating regulators across different countries, to planning routes that avoid illegal fishing and underwater volcanoes.
For Kelly, it doesn’t matter whether the challenge is related to technology, geography, hydrographic needs, scheduling or availability. The most important thing is presenting a solution that works for every stakeholder. “The way we solve problems sets the tone for projects, relationships and the industry. I aspire to be open, curious and a good listener, and encourage those around me to share their ideas. We celebrate our successes together and share our failures with one another, because that's how we all learn.”
