Our teams at Facebook are working hard on high-impact projects to keep our global community safe and secure as we work towards our mission of bringing the world closer together. This work encompasses a broad range of projects, from reducing graphic content and bullying to suicide prevention and more. We continually hear from our team members that they’re thankful to be a part of the solutions tackling hard problems and proud to be doing the most meaningful work of their careers. We dug in deeper and asked a few team members to share some of the most rewarding aspects of their work.

Real World Impact

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. We’re committed to keeping people safe and secure across our family of apps, and we take this responsibility seriously. We're developing solutions to some of our generation's toughest problems by building technology that makes the world a better place for the future.
“I grew up in India, where a lot of women aren’t safe, even online. I really care about protecting people, and wanted to be part of a company where I am empowered to make a difference for people around the world. On a day-to-day basis, I’m driven by what I can accomplish. When I talk to family and friends, or even strangers, I realize both the scale and the importance of the work we’re doing to safeguard their experience on Facebook. Making a real difference is so rewarding.” —Neha C., Engineering Manager
“When you work at Instagram, you’re helping and supporting other people, their interests and their journeys. For example, we have entire communities centered around hashtags. My sister was at risk of losing her eyesight, and was about to undergo a big surgery. Through a hashtag on Instagram, she found someone who had the same surgery and was able to connect with her. That’s what kindness means to me on the platform. It makes me happy to show up every day and be part of that.” —Kyle B., Engineering Manager, Instagram

Innovation That Matters

There are a variety of innovative ways we work hard to build solutions to keep people safe when sharing with others across Facebook communities. Some of our approaches are people-facing, and some systems run behind the scenes to catch potential issues and remove them before they ever reach a person. All the problems we are working to solve require people to be bold, get creative, and challenge each other to innovate to do what’s best for the community.
While being a large company with a vast amount of resources tackling these problems, we operate with smaller product teams that have the ability to go after problems in an agile way. Here at Facebook, we empower ideas to come from the bottom up, and there’s an urgency from everyone to get things right. I’m proud of the work we’re doing with the misinformation team tackling false news. We want to reduce distribution of misinformation that’s harmful, but we also want to respect people’s choices to seek out information they want. These are clearly complex problems with no single right answer and we're looking for people who are passionate about big challenges impacting our world today so we can build technology to improve it for generations to come.” —Michael M., Engineering Director
“I was born and raised in India, and elections there are often rigged. The chance to work on transparency and fighting election interference at Facebook was too good to pass up. Protecting elections across the world is a really hard thing to do - you’re protecting democracy. We want to make sure people understand who is paying for ads, and who is behind the content, so they know who to trust. Bad actors have gotten very sophisticated. The problems we’re tackling require people from every discipline to come together to solve them.” —Vasanth A., Technical Program Manager
“I’m most proud of the dashboard we’ve built, which tracks all of the work we are doing to keep our communities across Facebook’s family of apps safe and secure in one place. From fake accounts, to harassment, to fighting child exploitation, we’ve built a framework to help us better understand these problems and come up with solutions. We work to figure out the right metrics to give us a goalpost and ensure we are moving in the right direction.” —Amit G., Data Engineer

Generous, Cross-Functional Peers

Cross-functional work is extremely important at Facebook, whether it’s working with people in different offices, from different teams, or in different roles. Every effort we’re making to keep our communities safe and secure has the involvement of product designers, user experience researchers, product managers, content strategists, data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, and many others across different disciplines.
"When you are surrounded by smart people who are also generous and willing to help, you are soaking in their expertise and also producing at a higher caliber. Now I not only look at things from a design perspective, but I'm able to look at the overall product strategy from a more holistic perspective. My peers across product management, analytics, and engineering are industry leaders and we have a highly collaborative cross-functional way of working together to build the best products for people. It's my favorite part about working at Facebook.” —Perin R., Design Manager
“We had a big offsite where all different teams came together and it really solidified that even while working across different functions, we are all working toward the common goal of protecting people on Facebook. This common ground and the passion behind it is key to collaborating and moving quickly to make progress.” —Sagar P., Engineering Manager

We build because we see potential. We build because we want to solve problems. We build because we want to see what happens next.

Does this sound like work that interests you? We're continuing to make a significant investment in building integrity into each and every product, and our teams are quickly growing across the Bay Area, Seattle, New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., London, and Tel Aviv. Software engineers, product designers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers are just some of the roles we’re looking for.
